Service Tip #3 - Magnesium Chloride

With the snow flying, in Colorado, Liquid Magnesium Chloride is being used on the roads to keep intersections and streets from icing up. This, along with sanding the roads helps our driving conditions. According to a 2002 study by the Colorado Department of Transportation, “Over four million gallons have been used per year in Colorado because it has been effective in cleaning the roads and is the most cost effective option.”

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE?

Magnesium Chloride is the name for the chemical compounds MgCl2 and its various hydrates MgCl2(H2O)x. These salts have many applications; such as medical, topical and culinary use. It is also widely used as an anti-icer by a number of state highway departments, who have decreased the use of rock salt and sand. This popular solution is sprayed on pavement to prevent snow and ice from adhering or bonding to the roadway. It is much less toxic to plant life and is less corrosive to concrete and steel.

WHAT IS THAT COFFEE-LIKE FILM ON MY VEHICLE?

When the sun comes out, after a heavy snow storm, the ice and snow on the roads begin to melt. The dirt and the Magnesium Chloride mix into the slush and water on the roadway. Then, you get the sloppy, back-spray onto your car from others in front of you and road splash from your own tires creating that sticky, coffee like ‘film’ on your car.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WASH MY VEHICLE?

Magnesium Chloride is corrosive to metal parts, plastic, rubber and chrome. It has been know to create a number of problems on vehicles. The highly corrosive compound can eat through wires, huts, bolts and even brake shoes and rotors.

WHAT ABOUT MY CHROME TRIM PIECES?

If you leave the Magnesium Chloride on your vehicle too long it will start eating through your exterior chrome accent pieces. It will develop small spots at first and then they will develop into bigger ones and eventually ruin your chrome pieces.

DOESN'T MY WARRANTY COVER ME?

Parts, including chrome pieces are not covered. This is considered wear and tear and is not a warrantable repair under your new vehicle warranty or extended service plan.

CLEANING:

“Why won’t this stuff come off?”

According to http://www.snowplowing-contractors.com/mag_chloride.html Magnesium Chloride is a, "oderless, not quite clear liquid solution with a viscosity resembling whole milk. Different suppliers blend in various anti-corrosion or temperature lowering additives to achieve the exact end in mind."

The liquid is meant to stick to the roadways to help decrease the freezing temperature, and to keep ice from bonding to the surface of the road making roads less hazardous. This "milky" mixture, when kicked up by other vehicles, sticks to your vehicle and dries, making it difficult to wash off.

Many high end car washes have Magnesium Chloride cleaning sprays that help remove the film off your vehicle. If you don’t have a high end car wash near you, or don’t want to spend the money, at least take your car through an automated washer every couple of weeks or so. It is also important to use a high-pressure washer, hot water and soap to remove the grime from your braking systems and underneath your vehicle. Every few weeks use a soapy rag and hot water to wash off your chrome pieces thoroughly.

LET MARKLEY MOTORS SERVICE DEPARTMENTS HELP!

When you service your vehicle, at one of our two new locations, you receive a free car wash that scrubs the exterior of your car removing road grime. We also have a full-service detail shop that will clean your car, inside and out for $169. We will use a high pressure washer to clean your engine compartment, braking systems and undercarriage of your vehicle. Our detail crew will also wash the exterior, clean your carpets, interior and trim pieces.

New Vehicle Profile - 2010 Buick Lacrosse

The newest vehicle in the Buick line-up is the 2010 Buick Lacrosse.

This is not your ordinary Buick. This large luxury sedan is stylish, sleek and refined but has a very sporty appearance. The 2010 Buick Lacrosse has been redesigned from the inside and out and portrays the new look of Buick, which has been designed for both North American and Chinese markets.

The 2010 Buick Lacrosse builds on the design elements of the Buick Enclave Crossover Vehicle. However, the only similarities are in its ‘waterfall’ grill.

As the flagship of the Buick brand, one look at it and you will see why it emphasizes General Motor’s commitment to ‘World Class’ standards in automotive manufacturing. The Lacrosse is the first car in the United States to ride on the new Epsilon II global front-wheel drive platform.

The Buick Lacrosse is offered in three models – CX, CXL and CXS.

POWERPLANTS/TRANSMISSION:

The CX and CXL comes standard with a direct-injection 3.0 liter V6 with 255 horsepower. Later in 2010 a direct-injection 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine generating 182 horsepower will be available on the CL and CXL. The CXS has a 3.6 liter V6 with 280 horsepower. All are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that increases shift smoothness and better mpg highway than either a four or five speed transmission. All-wheel drive is available on the CXL.

DESIGN:

Every element, inside and outside bring energy and spirit to this new model. The sleek lines, refined interior and bold exterior portholes make this Buick stand apart from the competition.

SAFETY FEATURES:

Available safety features include ABS, traction control, Stabilitrack – antiskid control, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Blind-spot alert is also offered.

Markely Motors and The Nutcracker

Markley Motors supports The Nutcracker and is a major sponsor of Canyon Concert Ballet & Dance Center.

Canyon Concert Ballet & Dance Center is a non profit school and performance company and is comprised of children and dance professionals in the Northern Colorado community who volunteer to perform a full season of high quality productions. One such production, is The Nutcracker, held annually at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center, December 10-13, 2009

THE NUTCRACKER:

The Nutcracker is a fairy tale-ballet in two acts, three scenes, by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky. In 1891 Alexandre Dumas Pere adapted E.T.A. Hoffman's story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and was set to music by Tchaikovsky.

For many years Canyon Concert Ballet has held many variations of this production as a way for its students to gain exposure and experience dancing in a large, open-stage production. The Nutcracker is a major fundraising event for the non profit dance center. It raises roughly 75% of the money needed, for annual operating expenses and teacher's salaries.

ABOUT CANYON CONCERT BALLET
Canyon Concert Ballet (CCB), along with the Canyon Concert Dance Center (CCDC), is a leading dance performance producer and dance education institution. Founded in 1978, Canyon Concert Ballet and Dance Center is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.

Our mission is to create and share the passion of dance through artistically enriching performances and dance education. Our vision is to provide a sustainable community forum for dance performance and education.

LIVE SYMPHONY:
As always, CCB strives to have a live Symphony perform with their annual Nutcracker. In recent years, we have hired a number of independent musicians (most of whom perform with the Fort Collins Symphony) and they have performed under Wes Kenny as the Canyon Concert Symphony. This year, we are happy to announce that CCB has been able Negotiate a price with the Fort Collins Symphony directly. It is always such a joy to have live orchestration! It is however; the most expensive element of staging the Nutcracker, totaling approx. 1/4 of our total expenses.

--Jessica Freestone - Artistic Director, CCB

New Vehicle Profile - GMC Terrain

The newest vehicle in the GMC line-up is the GMC Terrain.

This crossover SUV is completely new from the ground up. It's beefy, rugged nature is true to the GMC brand, however its refinement is completely surprising. The five-passenger interior is quiet, attractive and roomy. It's center stacked controls and knobs add pizazz and style, compared to many of its competitors in the same market segment.

It's interior isn't the only thing that is bold about it!

The front grill is aggressive looking and the wheel arches give it that beefy look while the lines from the A pillar to the rear glass give it that sleek appearance.

Economy Vs. Performance

For the economic minded, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque is standard and a 3.0-liter V6 producing 264 hp and 222 lb-ft of torque is available for the performance minded individual. Both engines come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive; all-wheel drive is optional across the board.

Safety:
The 2010 GMC Terrain comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and OnStar. Rear parking sensors are optional.

Service Tip #1 - Wiper Blades

Now is a good time to check your wiper blades!

With the snow flying, if you haven't already checked your blades or changed them, now is a good time to do so. It becomes harder to see through smeared windows as the rubber cracks, spits, hardens, or peels off of the metal. When they peel off the metal you run the risk of the blade scraping your windshield, and that can impede your vision through the glass.

HEAVY SNOW

Scrape your windshield first:

When we get these bigger snowstorms, don't forget to turn off your wipers before you start your vehicle. We have seen several customers in the last few weeks coming in with their wiper motors burnt out. This happens when the blades freeze to the windshield and the wiper motor is still turned on. Also, the weight of the snow can burn your motor out as well.

REMEMBER: Turn your defrost on, scrape your windshield, then use your wipers.

These additional steps can save keep you from having to spend money on a new wiper motor.
