Markely Motors and The Nutcracker

Markley Motors supports The Nutcracker and is a major sponsor of Canyon Concert Ballet & Dance Center.

Canyon Concert Ballet & Dance Center is a non profit school and performance company and is comprised of children and dance professionals in the Northern Colorado community who volunteer to perform a full season of high quality productions. One such production, is The Nutcracker, held annually at the Fort Collins Lincoln Center, December 10-13, 2009

THE NUTCRACKER:

The Nutcracker is a fairy tale-ballet in two acts, three scenes, by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky. In 1891 Alexandre Dumas Pere adapted E.T.A. Hoffman's story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" and was set to music by Tchaikovsky.

For many years Canyon Concert Ballet has held many variations of this production as a way for its students to gain exposure and experience dancing in a large, open-stage production. The Nutcracker is a major fundraising event for the non profit dance center. It raises roughly 75% of the money needed, for annual operating expenses and teacher's salaries.

ABOUT CANYON CONCERT BALLET
Canyon Concert Ballet (CCB), along with the Canyon Concert Dance Center (CCDC), is a leading dance performance producer and dance education institution. Founded in 1978, Canyon Concert Ballet and Dance Center is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization.

Our mission is to create and share the passion of dance through artistically enriching performances and dance education. Our vision is to provide a sustainable community forum for dance performance and education.

LIVE SYMPHONY:
As always, CCB strives to have a live Symphony perform with their annual Nutcracker. In recent years, we have hired a number of independent musicians (most of whom perform with the Fort Collins Symphony) and they have performed under Wes Kenny as the Canyon Concert Symphony. This year, we are happy to announce that CCB has been able Negotiate a price with the Fort Collins Symphony directly. It is always such a joy to have live orchestration! It is however; the most expensive element of staging the Nutcracker, totaling approx. 1/4 of our total expenses.

New Vehicle Profile - GMC Terrain

The newest vehicle in the GMC line-up is the GMC Terrain.

This crossover SUV is completely new from the ground up. It's beefy, rugged nature is true to the GMC brand, however its refinement is completely surprising. The five-passenger interior is quiet, attractive and roomy. It's center stacked controls and knobs add pizazz and style, compared to many of its competitors in the same market segment.

It's interior isn't the only thing that is bold about it!

The front grill is aggressive looking and the wheel arches give it that beefy look while the lines from the A pillar to the rear glass give it that sleek appearance.

Economy Vs. Performance

For the economic minded, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque is standard and a 3.0-liter V6 producing 264 hp and 222 lb-ft of torque is available for the performance minded individual. Both engines come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive; all-wheel drive is optional across the board.

Safety:
The 2010 GMC Terrain comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and OnStar. Rear parking sensors are optional.

Service Tip #1 - Wiper Blades

Now is a good time to check your wiper blades!

With the snow flying, if you haven't already checked your blades or changed them, now is a good time to do so. It becomes harder to see through smeared windows as the rubber cracks, spits, hardens, or peels off of the metal. When they peel off the metal you run the risk of the blade scraping your windshield, and that can impede your vision through the glass.

HEAVY SNOW

Scrape your windshield first:

When we get these bigger snowstorms, don't forget to turn off your wipers before you start your vehicle. We have seen several customers in the last few weeks coming in with their wiper motors burnt out. This happens when the blades freeze to the windshield and the wiper motor is still turned on. Also, the weight of the snow can burn your motor out as well.

REMEMBER: Turn your defrost on, scrape your windshield, then use your wipers.

These additional steps can save keep you from having to spend money on a new wiper motor.

The Digital Age: Text Message Vehicle Information

Technology changes how you search for vehicles . . .

Years ago you had to physically go by the dealership to see what cars they had available. A quick drive by and you had a good idea of the inventory, but it required you to go into the dealer.

Over time dealers began marketing their inventory in the newspapers and trade magazines. You could see what inventory they had without leaving the comfort of our own home. You could shop in your pajamas if you wanted to. Then, if you were interested, you could call into the dealer and speak with a sales person.

There were some limitations to all of these. You could not physically see the vehicle. Dealers sometimes would not give you the information you were requesting.

Then came the Internet . . .

The Internet allowed you to search through dealer's inventory, see photos, get price quotes, and schedule service conveniently. It also gave you the ability to check information through various third party websites.

This had one serious limitation. It wasn't portable, that is unless you have a cumbersome laptop with wireless connectivity to haul around with you.

Then comes the digital age of cell phones . . .

Everyone these days has a cell phone. More and more people are communicating by calling and text messaging than ever before. That leads to new ways of getting information. Websites and applications are readily available on your hand held devices. You can take them wherever you go. (That is if you have coverage.)

At Markley Motors we have always been ahead of the curve, as far as technological advances are concerned. We started our Internet department, before many other dealerhsips thought of the Internet as an option for doing business. Now, we are on the cutting edge of technology--Text Messaging.

TEXT MESSAGING:

Business application of text messaging is becoming more prevalent in America today. In Europe, text message marketing has been going on for over ten years. Recently, text message campaigns are a huge success. Take American Idol as an example. Their main voting structure is set up on text messaging.

TEXT MESSAGE VEHICLE INFORMATION:

Now, we are the first dealer in Fort Collins to provide Text Message Vehicle Information readily available on your cell phone or PDA device - all without having to have Internet connectivity. You can browse our inventory and download information on individual vehicles, wherever you go.

This new feature has many advantages for our customers. It gives them the ability to search our inventory and download vehicle photos, usually in less than 90 seconds. Then, if the customer wishes, they can initiate a non-threatening two-way conversation with a sales professional.

COLORADO BLUE LAWS:

The Colorado State Blue Law requires Automotive Dealers to be closed on Sunday. This is an advantage and disadvantage for consumers. The advantage is, the customer can shop and wander through the dealership inventory without having to be hounded by a sales person. The disadvantage is, unless the vehicles are labeled, consumers can not get information on specific vehicles--let alone, take the information with them.

CHECK OUT OUR MOBILE SOLUTION:

At Markley Motors, our vehicles are clearly marked with text codes that allows shoppers to browse the inventory, on Sundays and after-hours, and text the code on the vehicle to download vehicle make, model, price and photos instantly. All of our media will include text codes that will allow our customer to access our inventory--anytime--anywhere--anyplace.

HOW IT WORKS:

The process is simple. Text MARKLEY to 37483 which is the numerical code for (DRIVE).

  • Start a new text message session on your cell phone.
  • Type 37483 in (to) section or save 37483 in your contacts.
  • In your message type: MARKLEY
  • Then hit send.
  • Now you can search by make and model through our inventory.
If you see a vehicle on our lot or in an ad:

  • Start a new text message session on your cell phone.
  • Type 37483 in (to) section or save 37483 in your contacts.
  • In your message type the code displayed on the sticker on the windshield of the car, or the code in the ad. (This will be an 8 digit alpha/numerical code.)
  • Then hit send.
  • Now you will get specific info on that individual vehicle.
  • Next you will be asked if you want to download photos. If you reply A, 3 photos will be sent to your phone.
  • Next you will be asked if you would like to get more information on the vehicle and speak to the seller. Reply B.

Important Fire Safety Tip!

Tom Wadlington, in Honda Sales, received this from a friend of his.  This is VERY SCARY!

"Below are pictures of what remains of our 2007 Suburban. We are all okay but I wanted to warn everyone not to make the same mistake I did.

This fire resulted from leaving an Iphone charger/docking station plugged into the car outlet. It overheated and started a fire, while parked in our garage. PLEASE unplug anything you have in your car outlets once you turn off your car!

We were VERY fortunate that we found the fire, at 11pm, before going to bed and before it spread to the house. None of our garage heat detectors or house fire alarms went off (another item to take care of on my to do list)."

Apparently most makes and models do not shut off the power when the vehicle is off.  Please unplug any accessories you have attached. (Phone chargers, radar detectors, ipod's, coolers, gaming devices, etc.)

THIS BE-SAFE TIP BROUGHT TO YOU BY MARKLEY MOTORS!

Service Tip #2 - Tires

"Where the Rubber Meets the Road!"

This saying is a common idiom in the English language. It is used as an analogy for a defining moment in your life or when faced with an important decision or action you must take. When you think about this popular phrase it in car terms, its meaning is just as significant. Translated literally, it refers to when the tires make physical contact with the road surface. We all know that surface contact with the rubber and the road is VERY important.

TIRES: They are the only things, on your car, that are in contact with the road.

WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF YOUR TIRES?

I don't drive many miles: It is known fact that rubber breaks down, over time. Even if you are not putting very many miles on your car your tires may succumb to "Dry Rot" which cracks the surface and sides of the tire. In many cases you might not even see the signs of accelerated degeneration of your tires. This can cause blowouts or tire tread separations.

TREAD DEPTH:

Friction: As you drive, the contact with the road and the rubber creates friction which gradually wears down the tire. Many experts say that as long as your tire is at or above the tread wear bars (Usually 2/32 of an inch) that as long as the tire has no visible cuts, bulges, uneven wear or excessive cracking then you are "generally safe." For the best traction and safety, we suggest to keep at least 5/32 of an inch of tread on your tires and replace them if they wear unevenly.

CHECK THEM:

The Stick Test: Check your tread depth on a regular basis. Some extremists say to check your tires every time you get gas. You may think that is a little to much, at least check your tires every time you get your oil changed or every season change. (Every 3 months) You can buy a simple tire tread depth tool and "stick" your tires.

If nothing else use the quarter or penny test. Place a quarter into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Washington's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4/32" of tread depth remaining. Place a penny, so the Lincoln memorial is facing you and is upside down, into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32" of tread depth remaining.

ROTATE THEM:

Where the power is:
If you have a Front Wheel Drive (FWD) vehicle it is important to rotate your tires so that you have the tires with the most tread on the front. If you have a Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicle, have the most tread on the back. All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles it is important to make sure your tires wear evenly. Many AWD vehicles act as front wheel drive until slippage and then the rear kick in and True 4x4 vehicles run as RWD until the 4x4 is engaged. You may get uneven wear on AWD or 4x4 tires. Many people don't know that when you replace AWD or 4x4 tires it is essential to replace all four at the same time. If you don't, you may end up damaging your AWD or 4X4 systems, just because the circumference is different and the tires rotate at different rates. On a FWD or RWD vechicle replace the two in the front or the back at the same time.

WINTER TIRES:

My tires are studs: Many questions come up whether studded snow tires are necessary in winter driving. It depends on where you live and how much snow you get. In Colorado, for normal driving, all season radials are all right. If you commute or drive in the mountains then you might want to consider getting a set of studded tires. The Bridgestone Blizak, has been a popular tire for winter time. We get more positive feedback from our customers on that brand, in the winter time.

The Environmental Achievement Award

“Colorado Department of Health and Education Awards Markley Motors”

Voluntary Efforts of Local Dealership to Protect Environment Officially Recognized

September 16, 2009, Fort Collins, CO – Markley Motors of Fort Collins was recently granted the Bronze Environmental Achievement Award by the Office of Environmental Integration and Sustainability, a division of the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. Markley Motors is the only auto dealership in this year’s statewide recipient list. The annual awards recognize the voluntary and significant environmental achievements of Colorado businesses, organizations and state and local government agencies. The October awards ceremony in Denver will be attended by Governor Bill Ritter.

Among the notable efforts made by Markley Motors to reduce their impact on the environment and reduce their contributions to landfill waste are tire, oil and antifreeze recycling. Waste tires are often stockpiled at dealerships where they collect rainwater and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other diseases. Markley Motors has purchased a machine which compresses and staples each tire together so that the volume is reduced by approximately 80%. This also reduces the disease and fire potential dramatically. The tires are subsequently shipped to a recycling center in Sedalia, Colorado where they are transformed into shreds to be used in the tire-derived-fuel industry and in many other civil engineering applications, such as septic system drain fields, gas venting systems, sound barriers in freeway systems, etc.

Additionally, Markley Motors has purchased and successfully installed a water-borne basecoat paint system for their automotive collision repair and painting operation. This effectively reduces, if not eliminates, the use of high VOC solvents that contribute to the production of greenhouse gases and the destruction of the ozone. The system has greatly minimized the amount of solvent-borne hazardous waste generated and, most importantly, Markley Motors employees are no longer exposed to high levels of hazardous vapor emitted in paint spraying operations. Use of the system has reduced their overall VOC output by approximately 60%.

Another water-based system is in the service department where Markley Motors has purchased and installed water-based parts washers which emit no VOCs and replace the old solvent-based washers. No hazardous waste is generated with this system and employees are further protected.

“This award is just icing on the cake,” stated Terry Brunk, Fixed Operations Manager at Markley Motors, “We have been making strides in reducing our environmental impact for some time, just because it is the right thing to do. However, we are also proud to be officially recognized as an organization that is committed to exceeding expectations in sales and service, while respecting the safety and environment of our employees and the citizens of Northern Colorado.”

Though the service department and body shop are the stars of the dealership in this award, there is an overriding policy of environmental consciousness across department lines. The sales and administrative arms of Markley Motors continue to recycle and shred in every way possible: paper, aluminum, cardboard, etc. Further efforts include low energy lighting in the lot areas of the dealership to reduce emissions and ozone impact. Finally, the company has an Environmental Policy on their books which is not simply a statement but is enacted and implemented to the full extent within the dealership.

WAY TO GO!
